Sundays were Kyle’s day off from work. No one wanted to show up at work on Monday hangover from the night before, so there would not have been much business for him even if he did stay open. Besides, everyone needed a rest from work at some point and he was no exception. This morning he had pottered around doing the usual Sunday things, laundry, some cleaning, fixing the bathroom light. But by the time the afternoon had rolled round he had gotten bored with being indoors and went out for a walk. Hands shoved deep in the pockets of his coat (he really needed to buy gloves at some point) he made his way through the streets to the park where many of the trees were shedding their leaves, creating a carpet of browns and golds and reds. Deciduous trees fascinated Kyle as much as botany ever could. Back in his own country the vast, vast majority of the plants were evergreens and kept their foliage throughout the year. He had since learnt that this was because the weather was warm enough that they could keep right on growing throughout the winter. Nature was amazing like that. But here of course it was far too cold for trees to maintain their green upkeep, so away the leaves fell. After ogling the trees Kyle moved on towards the small pond located in the middle of the park. It honestly was not much of a place, the pond was chocked full of weeds. But some council member had gone to great lengths to keep the rubbish out of the area, and there were ducks. Ducks were great. Large enough to interact with, small enough to not eat your children, and quieter than geese. They were also happy to eat just about anything you offered them. Today, Kyle had a bag of breadcrumbs left over from making Schnitzel. When he got to the pond’s edge Kyle opened the bag and started scattering the contents. Within a few handfuls he had seven or eight ducks surrounding him, all looking for the extra food that was being offered. They would all be flying off soon to warmer places, once the pond froze over. “So ducks, where do you go in winter? Let me guess, its Bali right? Yes, you definitely fly over to Bali. I went to Bali once, fantastic place for a holiday. You made a good choice.” The ducks nibbled their bread in agreement. |
