HAVEN'T YOU HEARD WHAT BECOMES OF CURIOUS MINDS?
She was told not to show an ounce of fear when it came to dealing with property of the state. That's what they were, really. Property of the state. No one fears property because of the amount of control exerted upon property. Property is restrained, and property is kept under a watchful eye and taught fear. Fear that runs deep enough to make certain they make no attempts to resist. They weren't new property at all. They knew their places, and they knew they weren't to make trouble for the new intern. And besides, she herself had a couple tricks up her sleeve if they decided to do anything silly... not that she would use those tricks.
But oh, did she fear. She definitely did fear. She was scared to the bone, and no matter how hard she repressed that fear, it only grew. Maybe it was years of stories involving mutants revolting, maybe it was the revolting quality that all mutants possessed, maybe it was the fear of what dastardly things they could do to her, of just how easy it would be for them to harm her. She feared power, certainly. She feared it just as much as she feared using her own.
This was all in an effort to find her brother and to gather information in regards to reaching him. Her brother, who probably wasn't as human as she had once imagined him to be. She missed him dearly, yes, but with the knowledge of what he truly was, and the last image that he had burned into her head with murdering her poor dear friend, she was faltering in her mission. But here she was. Archadia City. The capital of the mutant trade.
Too bad she didn't know two shits about the mutant trade. She really should have come better prepared. Her university studies have allowed her some exploration on the ins and outs of the mutant trade, even some facts on mutant biology. Not that that field was very extensive. She wasn't graced with any explanation as to why mutants had certain powers, where these powers stemmed from, and why certain people had these mutations and others did not. It was said that it was fairly common for only one member of a family to have a mutation, given that mutant abilities were a recessive gene, but it didn't explain how these mutations came about in the first place, and why certain abilities arose. For one, she found it very interesting just how different her power of suggestion was in comparison to her brother's diamond-based abilities. But of course, she never brought that point up during her discussions at the university.
The university provided her with some sense of the logistics at least, but they couldn't give her the answer that she really wanted: Where was her brother, and did was her brother really in Archadia? If she could get those answers, she could finally have some peace of mind. If he wasn't, then she would have to find out where he was, and what was a better place than Archadia? If he was, then she would have to get him out of there. Somehow. But one thing at a time.
She found her own means of searching for those answers. Through the university, she was able to set herself up with the local Archadian government as an intern. The downside? She was working in the Property Protection division. Not with the Public Records division as she had counted on.
It was the lowest division that any intern could receive. Most new recruits entered with an intern position on the Property Protection division, surprising, given that there is only one internship position in the Property Protection division. In fact, the Property Protection division was the smallest division that one could possibly become a part of with the Archadian authority. It was just a position that was highly undesirable— after all, who would want to work with the government's mutant property, when they could be doing other things with the Archadian government? Dealing with human affairs was most certainly a much more bright looking prospect.
But no, she was here. Property Protection division. Day 1. Most interns apparently transferred to other divisions as soon as possible, but there were no vacancies. And it wasn't like there were many interns to begin with. Most last perhaps a week before they decide to call it quits. Of course, she wouldn't call it quits that early, but oh god, the horror stories.
One of the mutants procured by the Archadian government was one by the name of Kylan Thomassen. Upon reading the description of his powers, she was already quite frightened. After all, even if he technically can't read people dead, what if he were to read something rather frightening, or somewhat deadly? Of course, it was already noted that most of the time, when he would be under her supervision, he wouldn't be given access to books, and it is said it would take him much more energy to conjure things such as tanks and weapons, but the fear... well, he wasn't the one that scared her the most. It was the other one. Mihai Eliade.
His power was unsettling, really. And his role was quite unsettling. One of her duties as attendant would be to make certain that he didn't hurt himself, to supervise his regeneration process. But oh god, witnessing the torture process... she couldn't say that she was a stranger to bearing witness to pain, but the ability was sickening. To pass on your hurt and torment to someone else... now that disgusted her very much.
She arrived at their holding center, clad in what she deemed to be her professional best. Setting down her satchel, she stepped inside, to see only Mihai was in the room. Kylan was out on Archadian order, doing who knows what.
"H-hello there. The name is Charlotte van Rosenfeld, and it seems I'll be here to attend to you, Mister Eliade," she said, reluctantly offering a hand to give him the standard, cordial handshake. "It will be a pleasure working with you."
