“Up.”
This notion was simply given all the reply it was going to recieve with a grunt and the rustling of a thin mattress as the charge turned over from the unnatural position he had been sleeping in for the past couple of hours. It wasn’t like Matthew to be so uncompliant with the rules, but he had technically only gotten around two hours of sleep for what he assumed was the night time, considering most of the mutants and guards appeared in a more relaxed and lethargic state the last time he checked. In truth there was no practical way to judge what was night and what was day other than perhaps the varying in moods of everyone involved in this place. They could honestly all fall asleep at different times and nobody would know the difference between night and day. But for the sake of having an accomplishment for once, Matthew was going to say that he pulled an all nighter. He had only fallen asleep after the breakfast that he didn’t recieve was given to those who ‘deserved it’, truly exhausted for no fault other than his own.
So in this sight, he did stay awake for the entire night, mostly bored with the goings on of the other mutants whom had mostly been asleep due to the time of day, but he had done it. And he was able to feel his first notion of pride, something he probably hadn’t felt in years. He had been in control of his own life for once and even though it pretty much harmed him more than it did any good, Matthew was so proud he might have just strutted around the cell for no reason. Well, if he had been awake that is.
While he had pulled the stunt to actually feel something other than the overwhelming feeling of hopelessness and dizzying despair that had come and gone for a while, completely foreign to him since he was usually so peaceful and not liking to dwell on self-pity, he truly could not wake up at this moment in time. Even the order had provoked nothing more than the useless fight against his own eyelids which felt like someone had attached hundred pound weights to them, completely unbending in the fight to pull them awake for more than a few seconds at a time. So he had given up, probably a really bad mistake to do to people whom are in charge of what happens to you, but still one he let slip through his usually immaculate sense of rationality. So this is what being tired did to you.
It was quiet for a few moments, something that sent a distant part of Matthew that was awake to high alert, trying desperately to contact any part of him that was conscious to react to the danger that he sensed. However he was too dead tired to care anyway and therefore didn’t notice anything.
BANG
In an instant he was rolling with the uncoiled ease of an animal, eyes wide and searching and every sense wide awake to detect any immediate danger and do something about it. Relaxing a bit when nothing attacked him after the first few crazed heartbeats, he shifted his gaze to the bars of his cell where a few guards were staring in with sardonic smirks or the bored annoyance at having to be anywhere near a mutant in the first place. Yeah, well that made two of them then.
“Pourqoui, singe muet?” He asked calmly, his eyes wide in mock innocence hoping that none of these oafs spoke French or at least his words didn’t borderline any language they did understand. Straightening up from the crouching position he had taken up on the floor, he stretched the muscles in his back and arms, not even glancing at the guards again as he continued to take his good sweet time with getting ready.
“Hurry up, will you?” One grumbled, assuming just like the rest of them that Matthew was either really stupid or just happened to be so compliant that he would just jump into whatever order they gave him. Instead of answering him, he continued to move slower than what could be thought possible while throwing even more time away by massaging his leg which had fallen asleep and was now painfully tingling with every ticking heartbeat. He seemed to make time stop as he put the heels of his hands into his eyes and wiped away the last bit of sleep remaining with the hopes that wherever he was going he could just simply take up where he left off. Maybe they would be just moving him to a different cell so they could clean this one, something that was much more pleasant to think about than any alternative. Even better would be if they put him by himself in a cell, at least for a little while so he could catch up on his sleep and not worry about helping anyone else, an instinct that was sure to kick in if they happened to stumble into a cellmate. While Matthew didn’t want to be alone again for as long as the last time, he still couldn’t help but wish for a little sleep and companionship was most definitely not the direct cure for that.
He couldn’t keep everything at bay forever though and slowly he walked closer to the bars, glancing up at them with a plain expression of mock confusion. These guys had annoyed him already, and Matthew was as sure as hell not going to make this job easier for any of them, even if it meant he had to act as stupid as the unfeeling walls around them. Besides, he was still placing his bets with the fact that they wouldn’t hit him too hard with the thought of something big coming up, whatever it was. So he took his time, lifting his arms up for them to place the cuffs on him after a few times at getting them to say the command to him again and finally allowing it to happen with a small kick to get him moving. Oh how wonderful Mattie was at wasting people’s time.
Wiping the small smirk quickly off his features, he allowed them to push and prod him along quickly after taking so much time that could be spent elsewhere. Although Mattie didn’t mind, used to this type of behavior, and knowing that he deserved it for being so slow even if these guys did deserve everything thrown at them especially when they could be such idiots. He wouldn’t vocalize any complaint as long as they didn’t hit too hard and he knew that they wouldn’t, not today at least. They tugged him along for what seemed like only a few moments before they shoved him in front of a cell, quickly taking off his cuffs and throwing him within to the sound of a locked door behind him.
“Ni cul ni tête.” He grumbled, squeezing his eyes shut. So he wasn’t going to get beat up afterall. Well, that might still be a possibilty, but it was always better to look on the bright side.
