Feliciano dragged his feet as the tall blonde man in charge of 'taking care of him' led him down the hallway of his 'new home'. The man, Mikhail the boy had been told to call him, said that he'd been sulking in his room long enough. Feliciano was a big boy, right? He should be happy to be in such a nice place, with all these new friends to make. He'd be taken care of here, much better than his parents could've ever done.
He wanted to go home. Feliciano had been in this "Academy" place for a long time now, and he didn't like it.
Specifically how long, the child wasn't sure, but it was a
very long time. Mama and Papa were with him every day, and he couldn't count how many days they've been gone. He didn't want to know, really. His face and eyes were still red and puffed up from tears, and Mama always hated when he cried. Sniffling, the little brunette wiped his wet nose on his sleeve.
"Oh, Feliciano--" --the boy winced as the tall man said 'see' rather than 'chi'--
"--you know big boys aren't supposed to cry. Today's a big day! You're going to meet your new friends, and they'll want to see you smile."He didn't feel like smiling, though. After all the loud noises and the pain he'd felt his last day at home, Feliciano had woken up here, in this bright, scary place. His head hurt all the time, and his ears had these stupid white things taped over them. They made his skin itch, but the last time he tried to peel them off his ears hurt even more and Mikhail yelled at him. Mama and Papa
never yelled at him, they were the best Mama and Papa ever. Not like this bully blonde guy who kept trying to drag him out of his nice room to 'talk'. Mama and Papa always said to avoid strangers, like their next door neighbors who came over all the time, and to never,
ever leave the house, not even to go into the back yard. He didn't know
why they wouldn't let him touch the green stuff outside, but they always sounded really sad when they talked about the place behind the door--Mama even cried a few times--so he never,
ever did.
Mikhail, wouldn't take "No, mama said
not to!" for an answer.
That large hand tightened on his own as Feliciano tried to shy away, heels now digging into the slippery floor.
"V-veee, I don't wanna go," he whined, feeling tears in his eyes.
"It's too loud!" There were all sorts of voices out there, like when kids were playing at the swings down the street, only a lot more. Kshunk, kshunk of a ball being played with, and people running on the floor out there. He didn't like it--there were too many noises, and they made the pain and the itchiness worse. With his free hand, he picked at the sticky stuff holding the gross white towel-thing to his right ear.
The caretaker huffed irritably, just like the mean people who lived next door.
"You've been here a few weeks now, Feliciano," he replied, the sound of his voice making the small child flinch.
"I know you're scared, but if you stay hiding in your room, you won't make new friends, and you'll always be scared. You don't want that, do you?""I wasn't scared a h-home though! I want to go there!" Feliciano cried, stomping his foot and puffing his cheeks out. He could definitely feel tears in his eyes, and he wiped his nose on his sleeve again.
Before Mikhail could reply, or do something a bit nastier considering the scowl on his face, a soft voice interrupted him.
"Mikhail, sweetheart, maybe you should take a break." A pretty woman, almost as pretty as Mama, peered out of a little room next to the exit, offering a soft smile to the obviously agitated blonde.
"You've been here all morning, da? Sonia brought some sweets with her, you should go try them.""I can't," Mikhail replied, gesturing down to Feliciano with a huff.
"The Headmaster insisted that Feliciano here finally socialize with the rest of the students."The woman chuckled, stepping into the hallway and reaching out to pat Feliciano's hair. He shied from the touch, hunching in on himself a bit. Undeterred by that response, she smiled, ducking a few wayward strands of brown hair from her face.
"I can take him, if you'd like. I have to replace Mariya for recess duty, a few minutes early to show our new friend to the others isn't an inconvenience."As Mikhail, the bully, hesitated, Feliciano hurriedly yanked his hand away, rubbing it on his pants. He didn't want the blonde's mean germs on him.
"I don't wanna meet the others," he mumbled, still staring at the pretty brunette's shoes. Mama would've liked them, they were all shiny and black with little green ribbons. They would've look pretty with her eyes, even if they weren't the same color. Next to these two strangers, he felt so small. Mama and Papa never made him feel little.
"I just wanna go home..."Warm arms wrapped around his shoulders and drew him into a soft hug, just like Mama would when he was upset.
"This is your home now, sweetie," she murmured, though not loud enough to drown out the sound of Mikhail's snort as he turned and walked back the way the two of them had come. Feliciano tried to ignore it in favor of the nice perfume the woman had on. It was nice, not strong like some of the other grown ups he'd seen "these past few weeks", according to his caretaker.
"Besides, there's someone special here I know you'll want to meet.""...Really?" He didn't think there was anyone special here--Mama and Papa weren't, he'd tried to smell them like he could back home, but they weren't anywhere. There was something that smelled
kinda like them, but it was still way too different to be them. Maybe this lady was talking about that person?
"Who?"The woman pulled away just enough to smile at him, reaching up to tap his nose.
"I can't tell you yet, it's a surprise."Feliciano couldn't help but brighten up, just a little bit.
"T-Those are kinda like...presents, right?""Uh huh. It's a present just for you." The woman pushed her braid back over her shoulder as she pushed herself to her feet. Then she reached down to offer her hand to the small boy.
"But you have to come with me if you want to see it."With only half the trepadition he'd felt before--mostly because his earlier unease was smothered by the confusion and eagerness of a surprise, but also because his ears hurt less the more he focused on the pretty lady and her nice-smelling perfume--Feliciano reached up to take her hand. Still, though, he hovered anxiously at the door before it was unlocked and pushed open.
It was warm, and the lights were even brighter than they were inside. Amber eyes watered a bit and he reached up to rub them, squinting. There was a breeze tugging at his hair, a lot stronger than the little puffs that stirred the dust in his room back home. With it came all
sorts of smells, some of them he recognized from home as the "grass" and the "dirt" his mama told him about, but there were so many he couldn't place. He glanced around in confusion, taking in as much as he could all at once. There were so many other kids out here, some of them his age, and some of them even older! Some of them were like him and the woman who gently led him further into the playground, but some of them had strange colored hair or big ears like the animals in his story-books! What
was this place? Some of the kids even had wings, like the angels Papa said were watching over him!
"...Are they my surprise, ve?" he asked, pointing over to the large group of children starting to shuffle over towards them, gathered by other people wearing similar uniforms to the pretty lady and Mikhail.
The brunette laughed, shaking her head as she walked the two of them down the steps.
"No, Feliciano," she replied, making sure he didn't stumble over his feet, too busy staring at everything to mind his untied shoelaces.
"You're their surpise, for the moment. Your surprise'll come in a moment."Suddenly, Feliciano felt a whole bunch of people staring at him. He glanced away from the weird yellow lightbulb hanging up in the sky (staring at it made his eyes hurt really bad anyway) to see who it was and recoiled.
All of the other kids were staring at him. He'd never
seen so many of them before--they certainly didn't look like that many a few seconds ago. A little whine escaped him and he tried to get the pretty lady to let go. He would go outside later, when these kids were gone and he could do what he wanted without all them
staring at him. The white-robed woman, however, kept her grip gentle but unyielding, instead pushing him to stand in front of her.
"This is Feliciano Vargas!" She said cheerfully, smiling even when Feliciano tried to hide behind his hands, face red again.
"Everyone, let's be good friends and make it so he can feel at home, okay?"The small Italian flinched as the children shouted happily in response--the cacaphony of sounds made his ears hurt, a lot. He peered anxiously at the crowd from between his fingers. Most of them were smiling, already taking a few steps closer to get a better look at him, but there were a few unhappy faces as well. One of them caught him by surprise, if the little gasp that escaped him meant anything. Large, soft brown ears poked out of unruly hair, brown-green eyes narrowed as the smaller boy earned an angry look, for some reason. The boy wasn't really all that different, with all the other kids who had strange ears and tails and even the one with wings, but he just seemed
really familiar. Like Mama and Papa familiar. He glanced up at the woman behind him before he lowered his hands, still staring at the other brunette so content to frown at him. She offered a reassuring pat to his shoulder even as she told the other students to give Feliciano a moment. He didn't really pay much attention, already stepping over to the older child.
"V-Ve, are you the surprise..?" He asked, nervous, somewhat happy energy coursing through him.
