He had kept it rather short. He hadn’t mentioned his other struggles with his family’s – his beliefs. Nor had he talked about… his guilt regarding that tragedy that also had a big part in his view on mutants. Perhaps he was scared, even now, of talking about it out loud. With anyone. Not just Gilbert… maybe especially with Gilbert. None of this made any of what Antonio said any less true, however, and he hoped Gilbert believed him. From the way Gilbert met his eyes, leaned forward and places his hand over Antonio’s before he spoke… it seemed that he did. Even if he hadn’t spoke of everything – Antonio still felt his own surge of relief. He couldn’t recall ever speaking even this much about his views and how he’d changed from how he used to be. Never so openly – definitely never so soberly. And even if it had been halting, a skimming of the surface… he couldn’t even describe how happy he was to have said it. To one of his oldest, best friends even after the years of separation and not knowing. And… to be accepted for it. But, with Antonio opening up… came Gilbert’s further deepening of the subject. And putting everything about what had led up to this into place. More so than Antonio could have ever imagined. Antonio listened just as Gilbert had to him. As someone with siblings himself, an older brother as well no less, he could only barely begin to imagine the pain that Gilbert had felt when Ludwig was taken. The pain he had felt over the years of being separated from his little brother. He could vividly remember how much Gilbert had spoken of his beloved ‘West’ while he was with his friends. How much he would dote on him when he was with them as a group. A part of Antonio had taken that as a sign to be an even better brother to his own siblings – to try and learn from Gilbert and think about his siblings a little more as individuals. It pained him to think that Gilbert thought he should have been with Ludwig that day. To have done something so it wouldn’t have happened. That he was shaking telling his story to the paint that he had begun to dig his fingers into Antonio’s hand. And, after all of it, he stopped. Gilbert was still, waiting for what Antonio would say after his tale… “ I can see why you wouldn’t want to tell me then.” He began, slow. After that start he brought both of his hands up, placed them around Gilbert’s on the table between them. And he stared into his eyes – trying to make himself as sincere and empathetic as possible. There wasn’t much else he could do now for Gilbert. “ I’m glad you told me now though, Gilbert. It’s… sad. It’s terrible. I’m so sorry.” He bit at the corner of his lip at that – unsure if he had any right to be saying that. If it sounded cheap at all. “ Have you… seen him, heard from him at all since then?” Antonio asked after another pause. made by MISSO for use only by BECCA

We are the Lions... Free of the Coliseum... Antonio’s hands slid over his, his palms hot against Gil’s skin. It was only then that Gil realized he was cold. He shivered a bit, the adrenaline still coursing through him. It was hard to believe but… Antonio actually seemed to believe him, seemed genuinely empathetic. His eyes locked onto Toni’s, drinking in the acceptance like a man dying of thirst. How long had he dreamed of his friends, of finally telling them the reason why he had disappeared on them, why his emails never appeared in their inboxes, why he stopped showing up at their doors. Although, to be fair, Fran had already beat him to the punch, even before West had been taken, his favorite Frenchman had disappeared without a trace. No word to him or to Toni. His parents told him it was to be expected, Francis and his family was of a different ilk. Sooner or later he was going to move onto to bigger things, grander parties, friends with vacation homes in places Gil’d never heard of. He understood, but the reality of it had stung. Once again, Gil hadn’t measured up. It was only at that moment, with Toni sitting before him, that Gil realized the pain he must have put Toni through. Already one of their friends had disappeared from their trio, and then Gil pulled away as well, leaving Anthony alone, abandoned. His fingers tightened on Toni’s, contrasting sharply against his friend’s tanned skin. “Gott… Toni… I should have told you right away… I never should have left you in the dark. I was just… I was young and I was terrified. I failed West and I was certain that van was going to show up at our doorstep once more… looking for me. But I… I should have called you. I’m sorry… I… well I failed you too…” He sighed and looked down, smiling faintly. “I’m just lucky that you’re good enough of a person to forgive me.” He paused, mulling over Antonio’s question. His throat suddenly felt dry, and he closed his eyes. It wasn’t as though he didn’t think about West—the truth was he’d never stopped, not since that day nearly five years ago. But to hear some one else acknowledge his brother’s existence after so long… not even his parents would mention West’s name… Gil felt tears stinging at his eyes. “I haven’t. We uh… we got an official letter a few days after he was taken, there was something about genetic tests being positive… I… we never got an address, no calls, no further contact. I can’t even be sure if he’s alive.” Ah… dammit, he was shaking again. He pulled his hands away, and his fingers curled inwards, creating a fist on the table. “You’ll probably think I’m nuts… but I’m sure he’s alive. I feel it, you know? He’s my brother, Toni, he’s strong. And as long as he’s alive, I’m never going to stop searching for him. I’m never going to stop collecting resources and connections so I can help him when I find him.” When he looked up to meet Antonio’s eyes, his own burned with resolve. “It’s going to be difficult. But I’m going to do it. I just… I thought I’d let you know. After what I did to you, you deserve the truth. And I swear, from now on, you’ll get nothing but the truth from me.”

Silence passed between them for a brief time. The slight tremor in the hand beneath Antonio’s gave away Gilbert’s shiver. It could have been from actual chill – some hotels did keep their AC rather high. It could have been from shock, although that Antonio did doubt. Doubted because of the way Gilbert looked at him then. They were eyes of hope far before they were that of shock. The sincerity of Antonio’s heart had gotten through. All Antonio did was silently shake his head at Gilbert’s apologizing again for their sudden cut off of communication. It had been painful, confusing to lose two of his dearest friends one right after the other. He still could not decide whether it was made better or worse by the fact that he had had no indication as to why. If they were dead, upset, ill, simply tired of their trio. So many possibilities had passed through his mind over the years. He’d pictured so many ways that they would suddenly appear back into his life. When an email would suddenly appear with those familiar names or just a taller body with the same face showing up at his door. As the years had gone on he thought back to them less and less, thinking of them distantly at different times when he was reminded of those golden days of his childhood. To have those ripped away without reason… was rough, that was certain. But hearing Gilbert’s reason now, Antonio couldn’t imagine holding it against him. He had let other relationships in his life fall to the wayside for less. From there Antonio watched Gilbert shift, change visibly with each word that left him. He changed. From when he looked into Antonio’s eyes shivering, when his hands were fists on the table and his words edged with anger, and when he then spoke with such a quiet determination. He had been curling into himself before, out of guilt and remorse for past transgressions. After that it was an angry shaking for the despair that had befallen his brother, had befallen Gilbert in losing him. This Gilbert, the one that said that despite all difficulty he would get to his brother… That one had strength. His wild nature mixed with the anger and pain narrowed into something sharp, better directed than the impish pre-teen Antonio had known all those years ago. That impression is what made Antonio nod. As sincere and truthful as he had been before. “ If anyone could, Gilbert, it would be you.” made by MISSO for use only by BECCA

We are the Lions... Free of the Coliseum... Gilbert just stared at the brunette, eyes wide. He’d been working towards saving West for so long, with no support, no one who understood, who was sympathetic to his goals. He told himself again and again that it didn’t matter, that he didn’t need any cheerleaders, he would find West on his own, and that’s it. But… hearing Toni’s words of encouragement, well… Gil had no idea how much he had craved those words until that exact moment. He cleared his throat, determined not to wuss out now and cry. What kinda man cries over something so trivial as words? And so, Gil swallowed down the lump in his throat and laughed heartily, clapping his hand onto Toni’s shoulder. “Man, it’s good to hear that from you, Toni,” he said, eyes sparkling. “It means a lot, really.” He looked out towards the window, his expression sobering as he looked at the sun, peering between the forest of skyscrapers. “But Toni? You know I can’t involve you in this, right? I shouldn’t have told you anything but… well I kinda owed you. You deserved the truth.” Gil shrugged and stood up, stepping over to the window, placing his hand on the pane. “I don’t have to tell you this, but what I’m doing is dangerous, Toni. Some would probably say suicidal. You’d be better off leaving and pretending you never saw me today. It’d be safer. Because I’m not going to stop. I’m going to find West. And then I’m going to bring this whole system to the ground. Since when is it okay to own another human being, to tear them from their loved ones and imprison them like feral animals? It’s wrong.”Gil turned back, smiling bitterly. “Everything I’ve done, ever since the day West was taken, has been with those two goals in mind. Any friends, any romances, any family would be at risk, could be suspected if I get caught.” He paused and laughed again, thumbing his chest. “Not that I plan on getting caught! I’m far too good to be taken out of the game before things get interesting. But still, it’s bad policy to risk your friends without reason. That’s why… after today, we should probably split paths again.”He was smiling reassuringly, but it wasn’t hard to see that it was forced. He had made the decision to keep everyone at arms length, but now having his best friend before him. He underestimated just how difficult it was to actually push Antonio away. by worldie for kat

So quickly things can change from grateful, encouraging, hopeful, to fatalistic. It could be said of so many things, too many things in this world, and although Antonio could more than understand the logic of it... he hated that it was also true of this moment. That Gilbert could go from appearing so thankful to have finally found a friend to talk about this deep, painful secret with, open up about his more than lofty goals... only to then look away and say something like needing to split ways yet again. It was all so dramatic. Stepping away to look out the window when he spoke of it - something right out of the soap operas the maids would watch on the small tv in the kitchen when he was young. That isn't what made Antonio smile though. There was more than enough reason to be dramatic. This was a situation deserving of it that all soap operas hoped to capture. But no. He shook his head, and he smiled. " Gilbert, you really must have forgotten how I am if you think I'm going to walk from you now." Antonio has turned in his chain to face Gilbert, his elbow resting on the table and his chin in his palm as he speaks. Casual, almost playful but - also loyal and hard in his eyes. They had been best friends. They told each other everything up until things became too much. They were children then, such things were too much to place on anyone of their age and how things fell apart showed it. But they were older now. Antonio had grown, as Gilbert had as well by all obvious accounts. More so than Antonio no doubt in hearing is tale. Antonio could be understanding of that. What he could not and refused to be understanding of was breaking away completely after they had only just found each other. " I can be as much or as little involved as you want with that course, and I can't blame you for whichever you choose. It's your hard path and one that has been years in the making. I have no right to step into it. But I can and will stay your friend through it, no matter what you say or what happens. That I can promise you." The self assured grin softened into something more private. It's folded in on itself like a small but sweet cake of friendship and empathy. " So don't look so sad and let me know if you're going to make it hard or easy for me." made by MISSO for use only by BECCA
